Visit to ‘Special Border Economic Zone’ found the investment does not expand as planned.
After the government of the National Council for Peace and Order has issued the Special Economic Zone Development Policy Board Announcement No. 1/2015, specifying the areas for special economic development zones (the Special Economic Development Zone Policy Board Announcement No. 1/2015. In July 2015, the Government approved the establishment of the First Phase of Special Economic Zones (SEZ) in five border areas, namely (1) Mae Sot/Tak (2) Aranyaprathet/Sa Kaeo (3) Trat (4) Mukdahan and (5) Sadao/Song Khla.
The main purpose is to attract foreign investments, creating jobs, spreading prosperity to local areas in order to reduce disparities, managing border areas, as well as increasing national competitiveness in response to ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015. It also strives to deal with problems on illegal import of agricultural products and illegal migrants into the interior areas of Thailand.
